Reason 128: He taped his audition for House in a hotel’s bathroom

-Hugh Laurie auditioned for the role as Dr. Gregory House in his hotel room bathroom in Namibia. He was rehearsing his role for the film The Flight of the Phoenix and claimed that the bathroom was the only place with enough light. He also apologized for his appearance on tape before the audition as he’d just come back from filming. The fact that House has a somewhat scruffy and unkempt look, particularly his constant five o’clock shadow, has been attributed by creator David Shore to Laurie’s appearance in this audition tape.-

Stephen Fry: I’ll ask you about House, give me the card there. House. How did you get the part? I mean there are some rumours, something to do with a bathroom in Namibia?

Hugh Laurie: I put myself on tape, uh, and yes, I did record that piece of tape in a bathroom, because it was the only place with enough light, the camera wouldn’t uh… I think I was sitting on the lavatory actually… Uhm-

SF: So you were sitting on the loo, as you have done as House in subsequent episodes

Hugh Laurie: I have… And in real life
